Summer Mixed Container Design Ideas

It's almost time for stunning mixed containers to grace the porches in our neighborhoods. Picking out plants to fill your container can either be a blast, or totally overwhelming. Either way, below are some recipes for your inspiration!

The Key

You may have heard of the key to mixed container design, and it's using the "Thriller, Filler, Spiller" method. Your container should have at least one plant representing each category for a cohesive and pleasing look.
  • Thriller
    • Tall, shoots up, typically the focal point of your design
      • Grasses, Spike, Snapdragons, Mandevilla, Angelonia, Croton, Cordyline, snake plant, Alocasia
  • Filler
    • Bushy, fills in, provides color
      • Coleus, Marigolds, Celosia, Coneflower, impatiens, begonia, Vinca, geranium, Pentas, ferns
  • Spiller
    • Mounding or spilling habit, creates balance with your design
      • Portulaca, Mezoo, Sweet Potato Vine, Ivy, asparagus fern, creeping jenny, bacopa, streptocarpella
